Europe Day 6: Monday, May 15 (Naples)
6:05 am Delicious breakfast at Deck 15
We arrived at the port of Napoli (Naples), Italy today. To my dismay, it was nothing like what I imagined. I imagined a European version of Naples, Florida, one of my favorite destinations. Instead, it was trashy with a lot of construction going on. Later, I learned that the mafia controls the trash system, and since most citizens don't want to pay taxes, the mafia leaves the city dirty. We chose not to purchase the hop-on-hop-off tour and just explore free sites. We first went to a castle to see a view of the city.
Since pizza originated in Napoli, we of course had to have it for lunch. Right next door was a cute little gelator place, called Fatasia Gelati, that had gelato for cheap! I ordered nuplo and orea, best combination by far. I also ordered a cannoli because why not😉? We enjoyed window shopping. . . until the rain came.
I brought an umbrella for the trip, but just my luck, I didn't have it with me today. There were many vendors selling them on the streets, but I stubbornly refused to buy a cheap one—until the end when the rain basically had stopped😕. We decided to go to the Caravaggio Museum which was my favorite part since I had researched him for Art History last semester. I enjoyed seeing Artemesia Gentilischi's painting beside a Caravaggio follower's rendition of Judith and her Maidservant beheading Holoferness since that was my piece for Foundations 3.
Then, it started pouring again. We were walking through tight winding streets a toe away from near fast motorcycles and cars. There were gross things everywhere and my leather chacos got soaked. Then. . . I slipped on slick cobblestone and fell with a blood-curdling scream—well, more like a yelp, haha. My handy-dandy faux fashion raincoat was no help except for keeping my dress from getting completely soaked. I wished somebody shared an umbrella with me, but I felt selfish as others didn't even have a hood at all.
An Italian teacher from BJU recommended a few sights in Naples so instead of taking cover, we pressed on. Hidden in a little street, we found a small "China town" with Italian goodies, where I purchased a beautiful tambourine magnet and postcards. We visited some churches as well. Later, we ended up getting more pizza—one much better and bigger than the first (1 meter long).
Walking back to the port, Macey and I looked at some jewelry stores. As always, I didn't buy anything since I'm very indecisive and need much time to figure things out🙃. Oh well, I really just wanted to get back on the ship and sanitize myself. At around 5, we finally stepped onto the ship's deck and I headed straight for the shower. We really shouldn't have but we went to the Garden Cafe for a snack before our reservation at the Shanghai Restaurant at 8:30!
Asian food has always been one of my favorites (being Asian, myself, lol). We ordered 4 plates of pot stickers to share, spring rolls, and calamari, which was mainly for Cristina since I'm allergic. I had fried rice and Kung Pao chicken, which was just a 5/10. If there's a next time, I would probably just order pot stickers. For dessert, I ordered the Spiced Ginger Chocolate Cake, but I enjoyed the Red Bean Triangles more. They were basically like hopia or mung bean rolls. I was sooo full😂!
It's 1:00 am and I need my beauty rest for Rome tomorrow.
